Tabs, Bolts & Silence
Publication Design, Book Making

This 53-page book explores John Cage’s use of everyday objects in music. Inspired by A Composer’s Confessions, it highlights his experiments with screws, bolts, rubber, and even bread clips to transform sound.

The laser-cut chipboard cover, fabric impression, and hand-bound pages reflect Cage’s unconventional approach. A photograph of him preparing Sonatas and Interludes with household items shaped the book’s direction, emphasizing his belief that music exists in the unexpected.

Structured around ambition, doubt, the search for meaning, and wisdom, this book offers a tactile and conceptual tribute to Cage’s process. Binding and hardcover production were completed with the assistance of Amy Leners.
